World Fisheries Trust and the Township of Esquimalt's
World Oceans Day celebration at Esquimalt Gorge Park!
On June 4th, 2016, World Fisheries Trust hosted the 6th annual World Oceans’ Day celebration in Esquimalt Gorge Park. Whether you donated to the silent auction, ran a booth, volunteeredthroughout the day, or simply came and enjoyed the festivities, you helped make this World Oceans’ Day one of our best yet!
Elder Elmer George opened the day with a traditional blessing to welcome the community to Lekwungan territory at the shore front. For the remainder of the event, people participated in crafts, face painting, guided nature walks, watershed model demonstrations, the bouncy castle, and the marine aquarium in the Nature House. The Greek Feast food truck kindly provided a delicious lunch to many. A silent auction took place during the event that raised over $800, with items generously donated by Goldstream Bicycles, 3-Hour Sail, Fired Up, Hoyne Brewing Co., IMAX Victoria, Level Group Trading, Munro’s Books, Ocean River Sport, Murchie’s Tea and Coffee, Orca Spirit Adventure, Pacifica Paddle Sport, Pizzeria Prima Strada, the Robert Bateman Centre, Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre, TJ’s the Kiddies Store, Victoria Harbour Ferry, and Whimsical Wild.
We estimated that over 450 people attended the celebrations. The event was supported by many volunteers, 9 of whom were from World Fisheries Trust. In addition, Peninsula Streams, Pacific People’s Partnership, the Gorge Waterway Initiative, the Songhee’s Savage Canoe Team, BC Hydro, Victoria Food and Florist, Esquimalt Parks and local artists hosted booths and provided information and activities for the public to enjoy.
We thank VanCity and the Township of Esquimalt for kindly supporting the event financially, and everyone else who contributed with their time and generous donations.
See you next year!
