Joachim Carolsfeld, Ph.D.

Dr. Carolsfeld, originally from a small coastal town in BC, Canada, obtained his PhD working with fish pheromones and reproduction, a Masters in invertebrate neurophysiology and an Honours in marine biology, with intervening periods of working with fisheries, aquaculture, environmental surveys, boat mechanics, and SCUBA instruction. For the last decade, he has devoted his time to blending his diverse technical expertise with social sciences to design and implement multidisciplinary and multistakeholder projects that foster environmental conservation blended with equitable sustainable resource-based livelihoods. He has been Executive Director at WFT since mid-2006.

Alison obtained a Geography degree in her home town at the University of Victoria, BC, before completing her Masters in Community and Regional Planning at UBC - defending a thesis on watershed management in Santo André, Brazil. She helped design and manage WFT's Inland Fisheries project in Brazil beginning in 2003, focusing on the development of multi-stakeholder resource management and community-based economic development. She has recently moved to the Fraser Basin Council to manage their Fraser Salmon and Watersheds Project, but continues to collaborate with WFT.

Elaine has a law degree from the University of Calgary (Alberta, Canada) and a Masters of Public International Law from Lund University (Sweden). She has specialized and published in human rights and the environment, with a focus on gender and racial equality. She has worked with aboriginal groups in Canada and Greenland, as well as with community-based Maasai organizations in Tanzania to develop a gendered approach to environmental management and land rights. Elaine is currently a board member for the Canadian Executive Service Organization. She has worked on our CIDA-Brazil Inland Fisheries project and also developed gender equity and diversity policy guidelines on the use and conservation of aquatic resources in our IDRC Aquatic Resources Development project.
